The Hardin Generating Station is located in southern Montana, on the northern outskirts of Hardin and adjacent to the Crow Nation. Owned by Rocky Mountain Power, LLC,
a subsidiary of Centennial Power, Inc., a subsidiary of Bicent Power Company, the Hardin Generating Station has the distinction of being the cleanest burning coal plant in Montana and is the first pulverized coal plant to be built in that state in over 20 years. The plant is a 119 MW coal burning facility with a B&W pulverized coal water-wall boiler and one General Electric Steam Turbine.
Coal for the plant is provided by the Absaloka Mine, owned by the Crow Nation and operated by Westmoreland Resources, Inc. The plant is a base load facility, selling its entire load to Powerex Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of BC Hydro.
Construction of the plant began in December of 2003 and commercial operation was achieved in March of 2006. Colorado Energy Management's EPC Division provided construction management for a group of local and national contractors. Hardin Station is unique in that it is comprised largely of used equipment, including a 1968 vintage boiler and structural steel from the original boiler building relocated from South Africa and completely refurbished. The used steam turbine/generator was relocated from Korea and refurbished. O&M services are provided by a Colorado Energy Management staff comprised of talented local and seasoned CEM employees.
